How Long Will It Take to Complete Your Smile with Dentures?
March 6, 2023
Having an incomplete smile has wide-ranging effects on your life. It’s difficult to eat a variety of foods and even speak clearly. Additionally, it can negatively impact your self-confidence, making you shy away from engaging with others. Fortunately, getting dentures is a safe, effective, and cost-effective way to solve all these issues! You may feel very eager to get the process started and wonder how long it will take to finally have a full set of pearly whites again. Read on to learn the length of time you can expect for each stage of getting your new grin!
Every Smile is Unique & Has Varying Needs
The process of getting dentures will vary for everyone since there are many contributing factors that can add to or shorten the timeframe. From your initial consultation to your final adjustment, there will be many steps to take to ensure a natural, comfortable, and long-lasting set of teeth.
The following is the general step-by-step process of getting a restoration and the expected length of treatment for each part:
Preexisting Issues
When you attend your denture consultation, your dentist will perform a thorough examination to assess the state of your oral health. If you have any preexisting issues, such as gum disease or other infections, your smile will need to be treated so it can be healthy for your prosthetic. Also, if you will be receiving full dentures but still have some of your natural teeth, they will need to be removed. Every person is different, but it normally takes about 6-8 weeks for your mouth to heal from extractions. Then you’ll be ready to continue the process!
Creating a Mockup
Once your mouth is completely healthy and healed, it’s time to take precise impressions of your gums. These will be used to create a model of your dentures. Additionally, your dentist will take measurements of your mouth to ensure an accurate bite and ultimate comfortability. Once the mockup is complete, it will be sent to a high-tech dental lab to make your permanent dentures. This can take anywhere from six weeks to a couple of months. It’s best to ask your dental team for the exact projected timeframe.
Necessary Adjustments
After your dentures have been created, you will attend some adjustment visits to your dentist. They will make sure your new prosthetic fits properly and snugly, as well as ensure the teeth are the correct length and color. If there are changes to be made, they will do it so your new smile will be the best one possible for you! This can take anywhere from one to several visits, depending on the necessary adjustments.
Placing Your Final Smile
Once adjustments have been completed, your final dentures can be placed. Be mindful, there may be some more minor tweaks needed. Additionally, you may experience some soreness as you get comfortable with your new pearly whites. You can always visit your dentist about any concerns or questions you have. Now it’s time to enjoy all the benefits of a beautiful, lifelike, and reliable smile!
